Stephen Elop: Nokia X and Asha Aren’t Going Anywhere

With the Microsoft-Nokia merger complete at least one big question still remains: Will Microsoft keep Nokia’s product line intact, or cut certain devices in an effort to boost Windows Phone? The Asha and Android-powered Nokia X lineups seem the most at risk, but according to Stephen Elop these devices aren’t going anywhere.

Elop, who previously served as Nokia’s CEO and is set to run Microsoft’s new hardware division, writes in a blog post that Microsoft will continue to support the entire lineup of devices. “We are committed to continuing our support for feature phones, the Asha family, and the Nokia X family of devices, announced at the Mobile World Congress in February,” he writes.

The promise that Asha and Nokia X devices will continue to receive support from Microsoft’s new mobile division may come as a relief for many, but there’s no guarantee either product line will get much more attention in the future. We’re guessing Microsoft probably won’t be announcing any new Asha or Nokia X devices in the near future. The company previously stated it hopes to use these phones as a bridge to Windows Phone, and the best way to do that may be to cut out any other options for upgrading customers.
